How To Choose The Right Flowers For Your Flower Wreath

In choosing the flowers for your flower wreath, you must know the size of the wreath you are planning to make. Below you will see some general recommendations.

  • Buy a few larger flowers to create focal points. These flowers will draw those who see them.

  • Get some medium flowers that complement the focal flowers. These are medium-sized so they do not compete with the focal flower, instead, they enhance it.
  • Don’t forget to add some fillers to your order. These tiny flowers are essential to add texture and movements to the design. You are not obligated to use fillers, but sometimes they are necessary. If you think you need to cover some mechanics or add it to the wreath, then go ahead and order some. Don’t overpower your design with fillers because it will look like it was made by an amateur. Only add a few touch-ups, and the wreath will look finished.

  • Greenery is sometimes needed to make it look more impressive. Add a few to the composition or use greenery to cover the mechanics.

What Tools And Supplies You Will Need

  • Knife – Use your knife to cut your floral foam.
  • Floral Knife – Use your floral knife to cut your flower stems.
  • Gloves – You will need gloves to protect you from getting cuts from your floral knife and damaging your hands when handling flowers, greenery, and other supplies.
  • Floral foam – This is used to place your flowers into. This is part of the flower wreath mechanic.
  •  Floral Wire – If you do not want to use floral foam, then you can use floral wire
  • Wire Cutters – Use wire cutters to cut the floral wire to the shape you want for your flower wreath.
  • Floral Tape – If you use floral wire to make your flower wreath, then you will likely use floral tape. It is used to tape the floral wire.
  • One 1/4″x24″ piece of plywood – ask the attendant at the home improvement store to cut the measurements to your desire.
  • Chicken wire – Used as part of the mechanic

  • Floral foam – Used as part of the mechanic
  • Hand saw – To cut the plywood.
  • Stapler with staples – To attach accessories and flowers.
  • Drill and a drill bit – Used to assemble your arrangement.

Be sure to take your time shopping around for the right tools and supplies for your floral wreath. Once you have gathered everything you need, then you can begin to make your floral wreath armature.

Making The Frame And Assembling Mechanics

Before assembling the frame for the flower wreath, you need to have the floral foam drinking water while working with the armature. This step is essential so you do not waste time.

You can make your armature to design your wreath. It can be any shape you like, but the most popular is the round or square shape. Let me tell you what you need to make a square wreath to hang on the door.

  • Place the foams’ brick needed for this project in a clean bucket with water and let them soak in water without forcing them to get wet so that when you insert your flowers, they will continue hydrating. If you push the foam in the water, then it will not drink the water properly and it will have dry spots. Take the floral foam out of the water when no more bubbles are coming out.
  • Get your piece of plywood and place it on a table using two risers on both sides of the wood. Raise it and drill a hole in the center so the saw can fit in it to cut the center part. Once this part is gone, then you should have the frame for your square wreath.

  • Remove the risers and place the form on the table. It should be at least 2.7″ wide. Now is time to set a brick of foam on the chicken wire to see how much chicken wire you will need. You need to cover the foam bricks and have at least two inches to staple the wire on the back of the frame to secure the whole piece. Once you have the chicken wire calculated and cut with the wire cutter, then place it on the table and add as many wet foam bricks as you need. If you have larger floral foam pieces, then you can cut them to fit the flower wreath form.

  • Put the frame on top of the foams. Get your staple and make sure it has staplers in it so you can secure the wire to the back of the frame. Start by attaching the center on the four sizes on the frame.                                                                                                                                                   It will be easier to handle if you start this way. Staple simultaneously the inner and outer of the back of the structure and repeat it until done.

Remember to prepare your flowers by cutting the stems. Also, remove leaves that you will not need in your arrangement. Finally, remove imperfect petals.

  • You can start placing green at the edge of the frame, outside, and inside where the cut out is. Then continue by adding the focal flowers through the shape of your wreath. Once you are finished with this part, then add the accent flower. It is a medium-sized flower that will complement the focal flower but doesn’t compete with it. Once this is done, the final step will be to add fillers and accents details.

  • It’s time to hang the wreath on the door. Use the cut-out part to hang it in a diamond shape or square. You have those two choices. Besides hanging it on the door, this wreath can be used as the centerpiece. If you make several wreaths, then you can group them and hang them from the ceiling or use them as a backdrop decor for a photo area or the stage. You can also mark the entrance by using pedestals to hang them. Use your imagination and you will be surprised at how you can use them in places you never thought were possible.

Commercial structures come in paper mache. That is why it is crucial to make it stronger also. The foam pieces are not too wide, so be mindful when inserting the floral stems to continue hydrating.

It would help if you marked up your flowers and other materials and added the labor costs. The quality of your work will also strongly determine how much your customers are willing to pay for your creation.
